After spending four years on death row for the brutal murder of her husband, Sophia Dennison takes her final walk in the Mountain View Facility in Gatesville and is put to death by lethal injection at 1200 a.m. Several hours after Sophia's execution, FBI agent Mark Armitage is called to investigate a serious disturbance at the prison. Upon arriving he finds the place a war zone. After being debriefed by his friend and partner, Dustin Mercer, he views the videotapes and learns that the source of the destruction is Sophia. Footage reveals that seven minutes after her execution, she miraculously resurrected, breaking free of her bonds and overpowering several guards. Sophia Dennison has escaped and is now on the run.... The hunt is on for the first actual superhuman.

I read where the author wrote that he asked his "professional editors" to go back over the book to correct "any errors" found. I have to say that I see no evidence whatsoever that this book has ever been touched by a high school graduate (which is difficult to believe, if the author graduated college). I hate to write negative reviews, but this is what I honestly have to say...

Look, I understand that some people, even some educated people, have problems with grammar and science. That's why we have editors. Seriously, though, if editors have looked at this book and this is their corrected version, they should be fired, and perhaps beaten with a stick. Both this book and the second in the series, which I would not have purchased had I read this one first, are not just replete with errors, but are a constant flow of bad grammar, incorrect words, and obvious mistakes. For example:

The excessive use of pronouns often makes the action difficult to follow. Sometimes, a sentence or paragraph will reference just one person by name, and then have a constant flow of "he" did this to "him" and injured "his" body part, or something to that effect, and one doesn't understand who is hitting whom until one sees who flies back into a wall, and sometimes even then no name is given, and one is left wondering how a fight went, or if the subject of the sentence simply attacked himself (or herself).

There is no "harsh atmosphere" in space. In fact, one might go so far as to say that THERE IS NO ATMOSPHERE IN SPACE AT ALL. I only mention this minor detail because it is mentioned so many times.

The sentences constantly switch from present tense to past tense and back. The use of present tense in telling a story is a technique best left to verbal storytelling by undereducated persons who don't really care whether they sound undereducated. In written work, it sounds lazy, and it breaks the flow of the sentence.

I won't pick on the author for the various scientific details that most people don't realize or don't think about. And I don't expect a book to be completely free of errors. I used to, back when editors did their jobs. In recent years, they've grown lazy and/or incompetent. But the first two books of this series don't appear to have ever been proof-read by even an amateur editor. As superhero stories go, this one has potential. The concept is vaguely fresh and, while the concept is no more believable than it is in most stories of the genre, it is poorly executed. I purchased the first two books before reading either. Now that I've read them, I won't be purchasing more books by this author. I might have considered it, but when the author wrote in the book's description on this site that he had sent the book back to the editors in response to the reviews, I felt that our intelligence, as readers, had been insulted. I believe it to be a lie that this book was edited once, much less twice.

And honestly, if this book really was sent to professional editors, those editors need to go back to Junior High. I had better grammar when I was six years old.

The First First Series #1 (Audible Audio Edition) Kipjo K Ewers Carla MercerMeyer Tantor Audio Books Reviews

5 star book, but two stars off for horrific editing. I took a chance on this one after reading many of the reviews. The book is quite good in spite of itself. And with as bad as the editing is, I won't be buying book 2, same warnings on those reviews as well.

It's got a lot of good stuff in this book and some fun story ideas and changes. And if this is a first effort/published, its still worth the read. But this book screams either "I was living life in a slush pile" or "Please save me with a proof reading editor to fix my many mistakes."

If you can get past the horrid spelling and wrong word use and punctuation errors, you can enjoy the book. I did, but it takes you right out of the story so fast when you keep hitting the speed bumps. It was very distracting and made the book a chore by the end instead of the fun that it was.
I would have enjoyed this book a lot more if the writing didn't have so many problems. It wasn't a matter of plot or story, but of just bad sentence structure. There were sentences that were entirely missing words, run-on sentences that took up half a paragraph, and the usual assortment of bad spelling and grammar. I have read the author's other replies to reviews, and it sounds like he worked hard to get his text cleaned up - but this just isn't publication quality writing.

The cursing also bothered me the author dedicates the book to God... and then peppers the opening scenes with obscenities. I'm sure the author wanted to make the writing realistic, and yes - cops really do talk that way, but it still bothered me that he makes a declaration of faith and then proceeds to write in a manner that kind of contradicts that.

For now, this is one I'd skip - at least until the author lets another editor make a pass at it.
I can only imagine how difficult it is to write a book, and respect the effort needed, but this is more than a little bad. It started out OK, but quickly devolved into a mess. I honestly wonder what effort was made to edit it. At times it almost seemed like the author wrote in some kind of weird stream-of-consciousness style. There weren't commas where they should be, and ones where they shouldn't. I could say more, but there's no point. I think the author has promise, but he really needs more eyes on his writing before it's published.
Okay, I like Mr. Ewers' writing. And I like the story that's told.

Also, I "get" that he's trying to tell the story in a cinematic way.

Finally, I "get" that he's injecting pidgin dialog in to add color and verisimilitude. Even if they sometimes completely obfuscate what's being said from the reader.

I have zero problems with any of these.

So. Why the two star rating?

Because the novel is roughly second-draft quality with frequent and plentiful grammatical, usage and spelling mistakes.

A mistake here or there in a novel is to be expected now and again. That's a lot of words. But they occur here with jarring frequency and completely yank you out of your immersion in the story.

The thing that's needed here is better proofreading.
